Kaufman has been the county seat since 1851, when the town then called Kingsborough took the county’s name, after David S. Kaufman of the Texas and U.S. congresses. US-175 runs northwest to Dallas, SH-34 north to Terrell, and Cedar Creek Lake is a short drive southeast.
